The Seated Ballerina

|| WORD || The pop culture part of (Koon’s) art would be flimsy, almost weightless, but for this awareness of the past. Without being slavish about it, that is to say, without quoting directly, Koons manages to convey his place in the great chain of art; you feel that he measures himself against more than just Warhol. He is also an astute observer of other artists’ work, as a thoughtful, contrarian collector. __ David Salle
